From Conservative to Feminist: Why the Sudden Change?

For the past few years, I have been rather conservative in my viewpoints, politically and socially. However, in light of what happened with the Trayvon Martin case, My viewpoints have changed. You may be asking yourself, "why the sudden change?" It is simple. On Facebook, I had 'liked' several Conservative pages. When the verdict was delivered in the Trayvon Martin case, these conservatives praised George Zimmerman, saying he was acting in defense because he was attacked by a "thug." They were, pretty much, elated that Trayvon Martin was dead. "One less thug on the streets."
Tell me something: just because an African-American, 17 year old male wearing a hoodie, is wandering the streets at night, does that make him a thug? No, it does not. If it were an African-American man, standing trial for the murder of a teenage Caucasian male, I am sure the verdict would have been guilty. This is the reality that we live in: A disgusting, racist society.

Now, it is not just the reactions of those idiots on the conservative pages that has changed my mind. It is also because of their stance on gay rights, and women's rights. In a conservative's perfect world, the gay community would be second class citizens, with no rights whatsoever. In my eyes, that is just plain WRONG. People should not be ostracized for who they love. If two people, of the same gender, fall in love, they have every right to be together.

As far as my views on women's rights. I believe women should be seen as equals, not just in America, but, across the globe as well. In America, we still live in a predominately, male-centered world. Women are still being paid less than men. Half of the states are denying a woman's right to choose. For me, I choose to not have any abortions, but, I won't tell a woman to take my viewpoint. It is a woman's choice to do what she wants.
The thing that really gets me, as a low-income adult woman, is that the government is denying funding to Planned Parenthood, because they see Planned Parenthood as an "abortion lab." People like me, who are of low-income, should be able to go to Planned Parenthood for birth control options.

Anyways, these are the reasons why I am no longer a Conservative. I know that some of my viewpoints may be opposite of yours. However, I am the type of person who believes that everyone is entitled to their opinion. I respect the opinions of those who respect mine. You don't have to agree with me, but, I ask that you respect my opinions. That is all.
